This is the standard voltage regulation interval of the alternator regulator, designed to enable the normal charging of 24V lead-acid batteries (the full-charge voltage of a lead-acid battery is approximately 25.2V, and a slightly higher alternator voltage is required to complete the charging process).

Normal Voltage Fluctuations Under Different Working Conditions

All fluctuations below are within the normal range:

• Idling condition: The voltage is about 27V~27.5V. The regulator maintains the basic charging voltage at low rotational speeds and will stabilize in this interval when there is no heavy load.

• Normal operating speed (1500-2000 rpm): The voltage is about 28V~28.5V, which is the optimal operating voltage of the alternator, capable of meeting the entire vehicle’s power demand and supplementing charge for the storage battery.

• Under heavy load (e.g., air conditioner, main lights, hydraulic auxiliary equipment in use): The voltage will drop slightly, and it is normal as long as it does not fall below 27V. A voltage below 27V indicates insufficient alternator power or a regulator fault.

Key Judgments for Abnormal Voltage

❌ Sustained voltage below 26V: The alternator fails to generate power or has insufficient power output, which will cause battery undercharge, leading to difficulty in vehicle starting and electrical component malfunctions.

❌ Sustained voltage above 29V: Regulator malfunction (overvoltage), which will burn out the vehicle’s electrical components (instrument panel, solenoid valves, display screen, etc.). Immediate shutdown and maintenance are required

❌ Volatile voltage (fluctuating between 25V and 30V): This is most likely caused by worn alternator carbon brushes, poor regulator contact, or loose wiring connections.

Supplementary Note: Special Case for Small Excavators

A very small number of mini excavators (below 6 tons) adopt a 12V power supply system. Their alternators have a rated voltage of 12V with a normal operating voltage of 13.8V~14.5V, and the judgment logic is consistent with that of the 24V system (a voltage slightly higher than the battery’s rated voltage is normal).

In short, a 24V excavator alternator is operating normally as long as its working voltage stays within 27V~28.5V without significant fluctuations. The voltage can be checked directly via the voltage display on the excavator’s instrument panel (available on some models) or by measuring the positive and negative terminals of the battery with a multimeter.
